Best Practice: HC Olten brings 60 newcomers to the field hockey turf with a smart field day.

Olten, April 24, 2025 – How does a local club manage to get dozens of kids excited about field hockey? HC Olten knows the answer: they organize a field day that combines play, movement – and a pinch of chaos.

On April 24, three school classes from Wangen bei Olten took to the field to discover field field hockey. In all, some sixty children took part. With the help of six committed coaches from Olten and Basel, the basics of the sport were taught: ball control, passing, shooting – and of course: always hold the stick on the right side ;-).

Unihockey vs. Field Hockey

And that’s exactly what provoked a few laughs: for many children who came from unihockey and are used to using both sides of the stick, the“only right” was a real challenge. There was a lot of laughing, trying and celebrating – especially during the first successes.

The day was a real success. Not only because the children left the field with red cheeks and broad smiles, but also because this action shows how associations can reach new children in a simple and fun way. By actively reaching out to schools, preparing coaches well and adapting exercises to children’s ages, we create an experience that will live long in the memory – and perhaps even bring new members to the club.

Other Hockey-Community

We’re pleased to see that more and more clubs in Switzerland are organizing similar actions to get kids excited about our sport. Here are a few more inspiring examples:

🏑 Luzerner SC organized a varied field hockey camp during the school vacations.
🏫 HC Höfe organizes a field hockey school project day for local classes.
🤝 S ervette HC invites children to take part in “Invite a Friend” tournaments, where existing members bring friends

Growing together – sharing best practices

Initiatives like these are essential to the growth of our sport. They make it easy for children to learn about field hockey, and promote the visibility of our clubs in the region. At the same time, as a field hockey community, we can benefit enormously from each other.
