Asad van Gelderen. Serial General Secretary. And for 3 years with the RedSox seniors.
Meet the People – Asad van Gelderen

Swiss Hockey: Greetings Asad, nice that you have time for us. Time is almost priceless these days. And such a commitment to the board requires some time. We appreciate it very much, but we are also interested in: Why are you involved in the board as general secretary?
Asad: I have been active as secretary in an association for several years. The role of General Secretary at Swiss Hockey offers me new challenges. My son is also passionate about field hockey and I think it’s great to be able to play a supporting role here.
Swiss Hockey: You come from Holland. You’re born with the stick there. So what is your connection to / experience with country field hockey? How many caps can you boast?
Asad: Yes, I’m one of the few people in the Netherlands who wasn’t born with field hockey. I got into field hockey through my son. First as a spectator on the sidelines. Then as a volunteer setting up, baking and selling cakes … But for the last 3 years I’ve also picked up a stick myself and play for the Red Sox seniors.
Swiss Hockey: So you’re still quite new to the field hockey business … You’ve also been in office for a while (since October). What are your goals? What do you want to achieve?
Asad: I will try to let the board members work with their strength and be a good link to the clubs. Cooperation with the clubs is very important because we can only achieve something together. That’s why I was very pleased that we had such a great atmosphere at the last Presidents Meeting.
Swiss Hockey: As a “newcomer” you see many things for the first time. What is your impression? What do you think: what is already going well? What can go even better?
Asad: I feel and experience a lot of positivity and good energy. I am pleased to meet so many people who are all working hard to grow field hockey in Switzerland. I see the challenges in our limited resources to be able to implement the many great ideas. That means setting priorities …
Swiss Hockey: Limited resources, Christmas coming up – there’s something to wish for … What would it be for you Asad? What is your wish for the Christ Child?
Asad: That the U21 team makes a good impression in India.
Swiss Hockey: Thank you Asad for the great interview. We can only agree with your wish and keep our fingers crossed that it happens. Hopp Schwiiz!
