Meet the People – Sabrina Solomons-Maillard

Swiss Hockey: Sabrina, great to meet you here and thank you for the time you take for us. Since 1st of October this year you are Swiss Hockey’s Vice President. As far as we know, this is the first time for Swiss Hockey to have a female Vice President. So tell us more about yourself: Where do you live / are you from? What profession are you in?
Sabrina: Thank you for inviting me for this interview, I really appreciate the opportunity to introduce myself to the Swiss Hockey family. Coming to your questions: I live in Bern where I was born and raised. I am a Socialworker and work in the female jail in Hindelbank.
Swiss Hockey: And where did you learned to play field hockey? Which position you played? What’s your cap number?
Sabrina: So many questions in one go … I started playing hockey when I was 4 years old. My mother and grandma played hockey too, both in the national team as well. So, I grew up with hockey at YB, then went to LSC and ended up in RWW. I am a defender and love this position. I played for the national team since 2008 and I have 74 caps.
Swiss Hockey: Wow, that’s quite a hockey life … We also understand that beside your professional job as a social worker, you are also the coach oft he BeHC’s women team. And on top you volunteered to take-up the responsibility as Swiss Hockey’s Vice President. What drives you to become a Board Member?
Sabrina: Fieldhockey has given me so much in my time playing this unique sport and I would like to give something back to Fieldhockey and put my engagement, positivity, and the point of view as a former player into it.

Swiss Hockey: The Swiss Hockey family can be really grateful to have you in the Board … Tell us Sabrina: Where do you see Swiss Hockey in 5ys?
Sabrina: Bigger, stronger, and more competitive on an international level. I know that these are ambitious goals and we will not achieve it overnight. But if we all work on it together and take it step-by-step, I am confident that in 5ys time we will see a different Swiss Hockey.
Swiss Hockey: Indeed where is a lot to do … Where do you think we need to improve?
Sabrina: We need to find more financial sources and use the money thoughtfully. We must be more visible and present as board members within Switzerland and their Clubs and take care of those relationships and support the clubs. We should make sure, that we are more present and visible as Swiss Hockey on an international level.
Swiss Hockey: That’s also sounds like a lot of work. What is it that you can contribute to achieve your visions for Swiss Hockey?
Sabrina: With my energy and engagement, I can contribute to a positive vibe within the board and more so carry that out to the clubs and the hockey family. To be a woman in the more men lead board, I can make a difference with the point of view and thoughts of a woman.
Swiss Hockey : « Positive vibe », « make a difference » – critical éléments to move things. You also rightly mentioned that making fieldhockey more popular is critical. But tell us Sabrina: Why should one play field hockey?
Sabrina: It is an Olympic sport since 1908 and it is a very unique sport with a very family like community. Just try it and you will see =)
Swiss Hockey: As you also mentioned that we need to increase our financial means : how would you convince a company to sponsor Swiss Hockey?
Sabrina: To support a fringe sport that is still an Olympic discipline and should be supported to grow and become bigger and more competitive in Switzerland.
Swiss Hockey: Now, if you would have a wish – what would it be?
Sabrina: To be able to have a real hockey pitch for every club to make it easier for people to want to come play field hockey and to find big sponsors to kind of solve the financial problem that we are in now.
Swiss Hockey: Well, that’s two wishes Sabrina, but if only one of these come true, I am sure that the entire Swiss Hockey Family will be grateful for you forever. Let’s come to your closing message to the Swiss Hockey Community. Anything you want them to know / do ?
Sabrina: I’m proud to be part of this incredible hockey family. Together, we’ve come a long way, and with continued support, we’ll only grow stronger. Let’s keep pushing forward, stay connected, and make Swiss Hockey more visible, inclusive, and competitive.
Swiss Hockey: These are truly presidential words. Thank you so much Sabrina and we look forward to make our joined dream come true.
