Whitsun tournaments 2014

Swiss Region West Boys U-14 do well in Paris

The Swiss West regional selection was invited to the 25th edition of the Challenge Verrier, a yearly 3 day tournament for European top clubs during the pentacrost weekend.

With 14 boys and 3 staff members the selection travelled to Paris on Friday for what was for most of the boys their first foreign hockey trip. Facing Dutch and German clubs, the spirit was high but the expectations realistic. Most of the top clubs in those countries have more than 2000 members with multiple teams, up to 8,  in this age group. And they play 11 on 11 at full pitch, something we are not familiar with. So the boys had their work cut out for them. After some encouraging results on the first day the Swiss West boys were adjusting to the bigger game and the bigger opponents quite nicely and after the first round robin phase found themselves second in the poule standings. That meant a spot in the winners poule with four Dutch, one German and two French teams and a spot in the semi-final up for grabs.

Two wins and a narrow loss later and we secured a change to play for the tournament win. The semi-final on Monday against a vey well disciplined Dutch side was tight and high quality. The boys had their chances, even a extra time tip-in could have equalized it but the 1-0 loss might have been our best game of the tournament. The match for third place was now a must-win. And after another thriller, shoot-outs were needed to decide if we would go home with a trophy or empty handed. That last one was not an option. Our opponents found our goalie on their way in all their attempts while we keep founding the net.

Third place secured and the celebrations were on. This weekend brought not just hockey but so much more. The experience of travelling to a tournament abroad, staying as a group in cabins, the interaction with the other teams, the camaraderie and just the plain fun are invaluable experiences that can only be gained by playing these tournaments. The boys showed out on and off the field and behaved like true ambassadors for Swiss Hockey. Next year we should go again!

A special thanks to the families that joined us in Paris and supported us!

U14 Boys Zentral undefeated at the Whitsun tournament in Frankfurt

The U14 Regio Zentral players took part in the Whitsun tournament in Frankfurt/Main at Frankfurter SC 1880 from June 6 to 9. For most of the 18 players from BHC, BeHC, HCO and LSC, it was their first major tournament abroad.

Successful start
Right at the start, they faced the host’s first team. The U14 Regio Zentral played with ease and won against SC 80 with 1:0. After that, we played against ASV from Munich. Here, too, we played at eye level and had the better chances to score, but unfortunately we didn’t take advantage of them. In the end, we had to settle for a 0-0 draw. The last game of the preliminary round against Marienburger SC also ended in a 1:1 draw after a hard-fought match.

Tension until the end
After an unsatisfactory 0-0 draw against SV Kampong due to the greater number of chances, we had to win against ESV München to reach the semi-finals. We led 2-0 until two minutes before the end, but let the game slip away in the final minutes and had to settle for a 2-2 draw. Victory in the penalty shoot-out against HTCH Hamburg (3:1) and a 0:0 against the second team of SC 80 secured us 5th place in the end. The first team of FC 80 won the tournament in a penalty shoot-out against ESV München.

Positive conclusion
Our U14 Regio was the only team in the tournament to remain unbeaten and can even call itself the “winner-winner” thanks to the 1:0 in the opening game; this was thanks to a stable defensive performance and great commitment from the team. Only our exploitation of chances in front of the opponent’s goal needs to improve. We left Frankfurt with a lot of sympathy and respect for Swiss field hockey.

U14 Regio Ost Boys at the Whitsun Tournament in Cologne

The highlight of the year was on the program for the U14 Regio Ost on the Whitsun weekend. Together with the U14 Regio Ost Girls, we were invited to the Whitsun tournament at Schwarz-Weiss Köln

Day 1

There we filled the streetcar with all 36 kids and 4 supervisors. After a short walk we finally reached the club grounds of Schwarz-Weiss Köln. The facilities were very impressive for everyone. In addition to the two artificial turf pitches, there were also 19 tennis courts and two padel courts. Everyone set up their tents and settled in. Afterwards, the young talents enjoyed a delicious pizza in the restaurant on the club grounds. Tired from the day’s travel, we all fell asleep. After a rainy night, the boys woke up surprisingly early. So we went for a short walk before getting down to breakfast. Gradually, other teams arrived and the anticipation for the tournament grew.

We kicked off against Düsseldorfer SC 99. We started the game full of pressure and scored the first goal early on. This obviously did the boys good and we were ultimately able to win the game 3:0. We started the second game against the hosts from Cologne with a lot of self-confidence . After a controlled first 15 minutes , however, you could tell the difference to German field hockey and in the end it was efficiency in front of goal that decided the game in favor of Schwarz-Weiss Köln. Unfortunately, the game was lost 0:3 , which dampened the mood somewhat. In the last game of the day against Braunschweiger THC , we wanted to defend better and take our chances more efficiently. Unfortunately , the plan didn’t quite work out. Despite good defensive play, we had to settle for a narrow 1-0 defeat. After a short period of disappointment, we analyzed our game and enjoyed a fun evening at the Players Night. Exhausted from the first day of the tournament, all the boys fell asleep early.

Day 2

On the second day, two more group games were on the agenda. After the morning activation and good preparation, we faced Nürnberger HTC. This time, the boys did a better job of building up against a man-to-man defense and we created a few good opportunities. The balanced game was decided 5 minutes before the end by the technically strong players from Nuremberg. After conceding two unfortunate goals, we lost our composure and ultimately conceded a 0:3 defeat. In the last group match against Rotation Prenzlauer Berg from Berlin, we wanted to reach the match for third place, for which we needed a win. Everyone fought passionately and the defense held tight for a long time. Unfortunately, we again failed to make the most of our chances and another 1:0 defeat meant we had to settle for 5th place in the group stage. The barbecue in the evening lifted the mood a little and we grew closer as a teamwith a joint team evening.

Day 3

On Whit Monday, we had another clash with Düsseldorfer SC 99 in the 5th place play-off . We put together a good plan to end the tournament on a positive note. The boys gave their all again. Everyone fought passionately and played their best game of the weekend. With a lot of possession and good pressure, we controlled the game and found the opening goal after 15 minutes. The end of the goal drought spurred everyone on and in the end we won 2:0 to take 5th place.

The girls also put in a strong performance and, like the boys, finished the tournament with a win in the match for 5th place. Tired and full of impressions, everyone set off on the return journey by train. After the five-hour journey, everyone arrived back in Baselexhausted but overjoyed .

The boys improved greatly over the whole weekend. We grew together well as a team both on and off the pitch. We were also able to greatly improve our field hockey level. All in all, it was a very successful weekend with lots of great new experiences for the team and staff. It was great fun for everyone and everyone is clearly motivated to continue working hard to achievea better field hockey level .

Many thanks to Schwarz-Weiss Köln for the invitation and the sensational execution and organization over the whole weekend. We learned a lot of new things and had an unforgettable weekend. We hope that we can be thereagain next year .
