The Swiss women’s national team played three test matches against Poland last weekend. These games marked another step in the preparation for the upcoming EuroHockey Championship Qualifier B Women 2024 in Douai, France.
The clear objective was to gain international competitive toughness and to come together in high-paced hockey. The weekend also provided an opportunity for our younger players to prove themselves on the international stage. Head coach Mathias Schaeben specifically aimed to improve the “international style of play.
Raffaela Triebold Plays Her 50th Match for Switzerland
A significant milestone was achieved by our midfielder Raffaela Triebold, who played her 50th international outdoor hockey match on Friday, marking the start of the test series. This is a great and well-deserved honor in Swiss women’s hockey. We would like to congratulate Raffaela on her success.
Team Performance Against Poland
The women’s national team showed good form, keeping pace with the Polish team, which is ranked 16 places higher in the world rankings. The first game was a narrow 0-1 loss, but it was an encouraging start with much more pace compared to the previous weekend. In the second game, the team struggled against the opponent’s quick play. However, lessons were quickly learned, and in the third game, the team showed improvement and earned a well-deserved 0-0 draw.
Six International Matches in Ten Days
The six international matches played – the first weekend against Austria, the second against Poland – provided a great opportunity to rigorously test the team. Both tactically and technically, significant progress was made towards the EuroHockey Qualifiers. Head coach Mathias Schaeben is pleased: “We made good use of the international matches and are very satisfied with what we set out to achieve. Our debutantes performed very well.” He referred to the seven new players from the youth team. “The remaining weeks will be used to finalize details and work on freshness.”
The test series against Poland has shown that the Swiss women’s national team is on the right track. The mix of many young and experienced players seems to be harmonizing well. We wish the team good preparation and much success at the EuroHockey Championship Qualifier in Douai, France.
