Swiss Hockey Alumni Network

An interview with Stephan Bircher, board member for competitive sports and driver of the Swiss Hockey Alumni Network.

Swiss Hockey: Stephan, why do we need a Swiss Hockey Alumni Network?

Stephan Bircher: First of all, it is important to know that the idea of a network of former national team players was launched years ago by Paul Schneider. The alumni network currently has 65 former national team players, but has fallen asleep somewhat in recent years and it is now our aim to revive it in order to prevent contact with former players from breaking off completely after their active careers and valuable experiences and relationships from being lost.

Swiss Hockey: That sounds good. And why should former players consider joining the community? What’s the benefit?

Stephan Bircher: Former players benefit by being able to maintain and expand their personal network, both privately and professionally. At the same time, they remain emotionally connected to the sport, gain access to events and opportunities to help shape them and can pass on their experience in a meaningful way, for example as mentors or in other roles. Participation is non-binding and free of charge, so you have nothing to lose.

Swiss Hockey: And how can the Swiss Hockey Alumni Network benefit the association?

Stephan Bircher: The alumni network offers strategic added value for the association, as it can draw on a broad spectrum of experience and expertise. Former players can be involved as ambassadors, mentors or specialists, which supports the development of the sport and at the same time strengthens the bond with the association.

Swiss Hockey: How can this contribute to the further development of the sport in Switzerland?

Stephan Bircher: The network contributes to further development by facilitating knowledge transfer between generations, supporting young talent through mentoring and bringing new impetus to the sport. This creates a more networked ecosystem that promotes innovation and should increase the quality and attractiveness of the sport in the long term.

Swiss Hockey: And for the clubs/associations? Does it also benefit them? What benefits do you see here?

Stephan Bircher: I can imagine that clubs and associations also benefit, as they gain access to committed former players who can contribute as coaches, supporters or networkers. Alumni can also bring valuable contacts in business and society with them, which opens up new opportunities for partnerships and sponsorship and at the same time strengthens the club’s identity.
